Visiting Chinese Teacher

Today at Fernridge School we had a teacher from China visit us. Room 1 was very lucky and he came to us first thing this morning. We were taught how to say hello in Chinese and count to 10. Then we were shown some awesome magic tricks. What a fantastic start to the day. Thank you Jake.

Firewise Programme

In week 1 all of the Junior classes completed the Firewise programme. We learnt all about how to be safe around fires, what to do when there is a fire and how to make sure our family has a safe meeting place in case we ever have a fire.
The Firemen telling us that matches and lighters are 'tools' not 'toys'.

Sorting pictures about different types of fire.

The boys pretending to be asleep in their bedroom getting ready to practice getting out of a fire safely.

The girls are being the smoke in a fire with the boys learning how to safely get out of fire.

The firemen then read us a story about some of the dangers during a fire.

We all learnt heaps about fire safety and what we should do to keep safe. Thank you to the Firemen who showed us the fire engine too.

Exploring Capacity

This week for Maths we are exploring Capacity. Today we had lots of different containers and poured water in them to see which one held the most water and which one held the least. We also experimented with how many little containers it would take to fill a big container. We had great fun with our Maths today.
Charlotte and Lucas comparing the amount of water in different size and shapes of bottles.
Joey, Grace, Phoenix, Theo and Kayla counting how many small containers it will take to fill one big container.
Lots of filling and counting by Kayla and Grace.
Max and Lily are working on how much is needed to fill 1/2 a bottle.
A tricky problem for Meila, Marco, Aaron and Indyanna! Which container holds the most? They discovered that they all hold the same.
Ryan and Ivy-Rose have put all of the containers in order from smallest to biggest.
Max ponders which container holds the most water as Lennox and  MacKay fill them up.
Great teamwork by Grace and Kayla as they see how much water they need to fill this bottle.
Indyanna and Marco working together to see how many small bottles it would take to fill this bigger one. It was 2!
Meila and Aaron have worked out it takes 10 little containers to fill the big one. Now they are going to try the medium sized container.
OH, NO!!!  As with all good Maths exploration we have made a bit of a mess and yellow water has gone everywhere!! But Charlotte, Lucas, Oskar and Ivy-Rose have filled each of theirbottles half way.

FRACTIONS! FRACTIONS! FRACTIONS!

This week we have been learning about fractions. We read a story called 'Give Me Half' about a girl and boy who had to share things. We then made posters showing who we would share a cookie with. Here are some of them.

Today we made real chocolate cookies. Luckily we didn't have to share them with anyone. They were really yummy!
Everyone is very keen to eat their cookie.

These cookies are the best.

We ate our cookies quickly before anyone came to get some.

We make the best cookies in Room 1.

Delicious and scrumptious.

Maths Fun and Games

Today during Maths time we learnt to play some new games. Mrs Kelly is challenging us by giving us some harder games to play. We played games using our addition and subtraction knowledge. It was great working cooperatively with others to learn the games and then teach them to our class mates. We love Maths in Room 1!!!
Meila and Kayla are adding and subtracting numbers to fill in the butterfly wings.
Lily and Ivy-Rose playing 'What comes next?"
Max and Joey using the dice to add numbers.
Theo, Phoenix and MacKay working together playing "Roll a Fact"
Marco and Ryan are looking carefully for dice patterns in their game.
Charlotte and Lucas are adding numbers to 'POP' the clown's balloons.
Indyanna and Oskar are trying to cover all of the pirates treasure chests in their addition game.

Highland Dancing

Today was  the first rehearsal of Room 1's item for the school production at the end of the term. We are very lucky to have Aaron's mum, Amberly, come in and play the bagpipes and show us some highland dancing steps. We listened to her playing the bagpipes and then show us how to dance. Then we all had a go at doing the highland fling.

Having a go to the bagpipe music.
"We are starting to get the hand of Highland Dancing!"
Look at the awesome Highland Dancing. All we need now are our kilts!
Amberly showing us how to dance. Jan is wishing she could join in too.
"We are certainly going to be awesome for the production. We have done some fantastic dancing in only 30 minutes."
BRING IT ON!!!
